Bay of Plenty & Lakes Health Promotion Workforce Development Group

Purpose of group

This group was first established in the Bay of Plenty region in November 2008 and then expanded to include Lakes in August 2011.  The purpose of the group is to work together to advocate for and provide coordinated professional development opportunities for community health providers.  Group members share national, regional and local workforce development information, with specific leadership provided by Toi Te Ora Public Health and the DHBs. 

This group communicates bi-monthly and operates a joint strategic plan for workforce development initiatives across the Bay of Plenty and Lakes region.  It is primarily focused on the non-regulated health promotion workforce, supporting the development of an effective and sustainable community health sector with the capability to improve the health of communities.

The group involves both District Health Boards, the regional Public Health Unit, Primary Health Organisations, Whanau Ora collective representation and relevant Maori provider organisations.

Key achievements since establishment:

  • Development of a clearing house for existing workforce development opportunities;

  • Development of a collective action plan based on Te Uru Kahikatea, which outlines the group's key activities over the coming three years;

  • Supporting of the Waikato/BOP and Lakes HEHA survey of Maori providers;

  • Improved communication channels and information on workforce development activities within the region to providers, with various trainings being promoted and supported;

  • Linking and promotion of national competency developments;

  • Support provided to workshops delivered in the region, for example Massey University Evaluation training and Health Promotion Forum Health Promotion certificate programme;

  • Production of a document celebrating health promotion initiatives across Bay of Plenty.  The resource has 27 examples of community projects;

  • A specific Ministry of Health contract to improve WFD planning across Maori providers, with key members being involved in the reference group and assisting in facilitation of workshops;

  • Regular discussion of regional training needs;

  • Provision of financial assistance, as able, to Maori and Pacific providers to undertake relevant training.
